Oakhurst Lane is the second-longest San Francisco stairway at 354 steps (after the Batteries to Bluffs Trail’s 473-ish). Pix 1 thru 7. There are 162 steps to the dead-end of Oak Park.
At Crestmont, up the West Ridge Trail that now has a sturdier, newer rope tied to a tree to help one up the first part of the steepish dirt trail. Works great; love it: pic 8. The West Ridge still looks like it used to when I’d scramble up it years ago. Let’s keep it that way: 9, 10. A few steps for easier access would be good only if no trees were felled; otherwise a good rope like this one will do just fine.
At the top of the West Ridge, the Historic Trail: 11 thru 14.
From the Historic, the South Ridge Trail to the summit: pic 15.
Summit: 16, 17.
Downhill on the East Ridge Trail: 18 thru 22.
It’s disheartening to see so many downed trees in Mount Sutro Forest but cheering to see new little eucalyptus sprouting up along the trails.
Continuing a short distance from the foot of the East Ridge along Medical Center Way: 23, 24, 25.
Pic 26: North Ridge Trail to the left. Down to the right at the trailhead for the Fairy Gates Trail that connects with the Edgewood Trail farther down.
Edgewood Trail out to the dead-end of redbricked Edgewood Ave. Pix 27 thru 36.
Views down and over to the lower Historic Trail from the Edgewood trailhead at Edgewood Ave. Pix 37, 38, 39.
A few blocks north on Edgewood Ave. will take you to the Farnsworth stairway, 149 steps down to Willard: 40 thru 48.
