To once again check out the picnic spot at the top of Lands End, above Fort Miley Forest, first into the forest, to the paved pedestrian trail. Out to the old Fort Miley buildings and picnic area: 1 thru 16
Then curving round the VA Hospital parking lot from the west side to the north parking lot. Between the windsock and helipad on the west and the Battle of the Bulge Trail to the east: 17 For the Battle of the Bulge Trail, you can also walk along the Legion of Honor parking lot (across from the golf course) nearly to its west end. Between parked cars is a short flight of stairs to a winding trail, with a few more steps at the top, where there are places to sit up here. This was the fourth or so time this year I’d checked the picnic spot to see if it had reopened. There’s constant construction going on around the parking lot area on the west side, but I’ve never seen anyone working down below. Some years ago (2010?) the edge of the north parking lot got shored up and a picnic area was aded below. It had walkways, stairs, benches, picnic tables, and lots of new plantings. It was a delightful little place anyone could visit with wood stairways descending from east and west. Some of the plants that were chosen seem to be doing okay, no doubt thanks to the bit of rain we got this fall. The others, not so well. Notice the lush, older Lands End greenery nearby. The plastic coverings over part of the area have expanded. What are their plans for it? It just looks so neglected. It has been a year or so since they closed it to visitors due to heavy rains — that happened LAST rainy season. So from the narrow railed walkway above, looking down and across: 18 thru 38 Above Lands End: 39, 40 , 41 Battle of the Bulge Trail: 42 thru 51 Continuing past the yellow vehicle barrier at the west end of the parking lot and down 47 steps to the top Lands End trail, the El Camino del Mar: 52 thru 58 Out to the upper parking lot overlook on the El Camino del Mar: 59 thru 67 Upper parking lot overlook: 68 thru 75 Entering Glen Canyon Park via the south trailhead off Bosworth (pic 1) again as the #44 bus (stops at Elk) often comes before the #52 that goes up to Diamond Heights. Along the upper westside trail: 2 thru 6 Turning for the east side and up 61 steps to the rocks area: 7 thru 12 And a swingin’ surprise! Who knows how long this one will stay up. Thee’s a sad tendency for installed park swings to soon disappear. This one could be gone by the time of this post: 13 thru 22 Climbing, north: 23, 24, 25 Up 79 more steps to the uppermost eastside trail that’s just below Christopher Park: 26 thru 30 Starting off a Presidio hike, uphill on Spruce from California Street, the same house I took Halloween decoration pix of had a new animated display: 1 thru 5 Passing thru Julius Kahn Park at the north end of Spruce, down to El Polin Spring: 6 Up 36 steps to the Main Post: 7, 8, 9 Up 56 steps to Post Chapel: 10, 11, 12 Trailhead for the forest from the east side: 13 A gorgeous winding trail out at the Cemetery Overlook 14 thru 28 Cemetery Overlook area:: 29 thru 37 Now down the west side from the overlook to Park Trail, 98 steps: 38, 39, 40 Park Trail: 41, 42 This is another Bernal Heights east hike and long overdue visit to the Nice Neighborhood Garden. Google Maps says its name is Wolfe Lane Community Garden. The garden's foot is at Brewster, across from the top of the Rutledge stairs. THENs (2005) for the north side: 1, 2 NOW: 3 21 steps to the first tier on the south side, now with a table and chairs. THEN: 4 NOWs: 5, 6 23 steps for the second level: 7, 8, 9 47 more steps up (10, 11) to the Nice Neighborhood Garden sign. THEN: 12 NOWs: 13, 14 Nearby is the top of the Franconia stairway (102 steps). THENs from 2004 before the huge makeover later that year: 15 thru 18 THENs from 2005: 19, 20 NOWs: 21 thru 32 Franconia below Montcalm: 33 Colorful house on Montcalm: 34 Peralta stairways -- First on the short, uneven concrete flight up to Rutledge: 35, 36, 37 Crossing Rutledge, a longer stairway up to Samoset: 38, 39, 40 Another colorful home near the east edge of Bernal Heights Park: 41 Heading west on the south side of Bernal Heights Blvd. are three separate stairways down to the next street: 42 thru 45 Alongside the Blvd. guardrail some newer plantings and a Guardian Eye: 46, 47 |
