Arlington Path: 3 thru 11
Crossing over the chasm: 12, 13
Bernal Cut Path: 14 thru 33
The third bridge is pedestrian only (34 thru 39) and descends on the Glen Park side near where I first started up the Arlington Path.

The Arlington Path starts up just east of the Glen Park BART/J-Church Metro stop. 46 St. Mary’s steps descend from Roanoke (below Arlington). First two pix.

Off the bus at Gold Mine, winding to Berkeley Way in the Diamond Heights neighborhood, soon ft the Onique steps one block down from the top of this three-block-long stairway.
Descending the remaining two blocks (first two pix) to the east rim of Glen Canyon for the trail alongside the guardrail at Diamond Heights Blvd. (pic 3), and down the 37 older steps from Elk & Sussex: pic 4. A short walk to the north on the main trail will take you to the first long stairway-trail climbed in the previous post: 5 thru 10 Up the 129 steps to the trail fork (pic 11) with Crags Court above, this time took the one I often take all the way from Crags Court, now downhill from the rocks: 12, 13, 14, 15 90 steps from here to the foot at the main paved trail. So 90 + 129 will give you a total of 219 for this particular route. Continuing north to where the trail starts to climb out to Portola: 16 thru 23 South on the main eastside trail for the 68 steps on the north side of the climbing rocks: 24, 25, 26. 27 Uphilling (pic 28) to another stairway that got extended to 79 steps. It starts down from the top eastside trall that’s just below Christopher Park: 29 thru 36 Top trail and park infomap: 37, 38 Down to Diamond Heights Shopping Center from Christopher Park: last pic. If you take the J-Church Metro to or from the Glen Park neighborhood, you’ll have stairs to ascend/descend from/to the stop at San Jose Ave. Counted 38 on the way back, first two pix.
There are also some stairways down from the neighborhoods on both sides of San Jose Ave. that you can see from the Metro, with interesting old concrete bridges and unique walkways overlooking San Jose. Two have names on Google Maps: one is Bernal Cut Path; another Arlington Path. Haven’t done these in years; must do soon. The #44 O’Shaughnessy showed up before the #52 Excelsior, so took it the several blocks from Diamond & Bosworth in the Glen Park ‘hood to the south end of Glen Canyon at the Glen Park Rec. Center. 55 steps down to a field from Bosworth near the Elk St. MUNI stop: pic 3 There’s another entrance into the park at the dead-end of Bosworth where the street turns north past some older homes. Green slopes now 4, 5 The first long one ascends from the southeast side of the park: 6 thru 11. This beauty climbs from the main paved trail: 109 up to some big rocks (12 thru 18) with 129 steps total. Gorgeous scenery and views. Chose one of the connectors after these first 129, an old high-up narrow trail that now includes 53 steps: 19 thru 28 This took me to the foot of the main steps that climb to Christopher Park: 29 thru 43. There are 77 steps up to the viewbench (had it to myself this time) on this section of stairs, with 92 total to the west edge of Christopher Park with its park infosigns. So your staircount, with all the new trails and steps in the park these days, will depend on which curvy route you choose. If you descend from Crags Court and stay on that one all the way, you’ll get 184 (last pic) down to the main trail near the tree-canopy entrance. |
