Working up a Sweat

Starting up Mount Sutro from the west side at Seventh Ave. and Warren, first a few blocks trek up Warren: 1

Then there’s the Oakhurst Lane stairway with about 353 steps: 2 thru 10

There’s a way out to Oak Park Dr. partway up: 11, 12

Continuing up Oakhurst. A few people were using this as a Stairmaster as I ascended: 13 thru 24

Top of it at Crestmont:  25, 26, 27

Turn left:  28

To get up into Sutro Forest from Crestmont, the West Ridge Trail is not marked at street level.  Scramble up this way:  29, 30, 31

The West Ridge’s steepish first part up to the Historic Trail:  32 thru 39

Historic Trail: 40, 41

Now to continue up the West Ridge for a second block, a shortcut to the summit: 42 thru 48

There’s a way around this log and rocks but I like climbing up alongside them, having done this for years: 47 thru 51

West Ridge Trail continuing to the summit: 52 thru 59

Some parts of trails were muddy from fogdrip, but the summit was very dry. Lots of planting flags with cleared-out spaces at the summit. Whatever they’ve planted hasn’t yet come up, same as last visit. Maybe after we’ve had some rain there’ll be results… How about a summit sea of California poppies?: 60 thru 70

Winding down the North Ridge Trail to the Mystery Trail: 71 thru 79

Mystery Trail: 80 thru 91

Can anyone enlighten me as to why that East Ridge Trail barrier is still here where the East Ridge meets the Mystery Trail partway up? It’s been months now with no obvious hazardous conditions noticed. Assume it’s still the same at the summit at that East Ridge trailhead: 92

East Ridge down to the road and Aldea Community Center: 93 thru 99

Aldea Community Center: 100, 101, 102

Along the road on the pedestrian  walkway curving down to the lower parking lot and the top of the north stairs:  103 thru 106

North stairway to its foot at Medical Center Way behind the UCSF buildings on Parnassus (136 steps): 107 thru 119

Beast Reopened

The Presidio’s lower Battery East Trail is walkable again. Its curvy walkway has been repaved, there’s new fencing along its length, and three new viewbenches have been added.

It reopened just in time for the Blue Angels. At these times the whole area is packed. Don’t even think of trying to take the #28 bridge bus from either of the two stops up here unless you’re used to taking Japanese commuter trains during rush hour.

The Battery East Overlook, however, does have a small parking lot next to it.

The lower Battery East Trail’s new look:  1 thru 19

Down the stairs (153): 20 thru 35

Foot of the steps at west Crissy Field: 36

West Crissy Field: 37, 38

Over to the newly designated mutiuse trail to go back up again. Hadn’t trekked up this in a while. The bench nearly up to the top is still there. There’s a big sign at the foot that says it’s closed to traffic except for cyclists:
39 thru44

Andrews Road back to the Battery East Trail: 45 thru 51

Battery East again: 52 thru 67

Battery East Overlook: 68

Onto the dirt trail and thru the low overhead tunnel: 69 thru 77

Out at the picnic area and up the short but steep trail: 78 thru 82

I like meandering around on San Francisco's park trails and public stairways, sometimes taking photos, and enjoying nature and the outdoors.
